Forget Jaylen Brown, Anthony Davis signs a record-setting three-year extension with the Los Angeles Lakers

The Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics are the two most successful teams in NBA history, and their rivalry extends beyond the court. The Lakers have the distinction of signing Jaylen Brown to the longest NBA contract ever ($304 million over five years).

We did warn that, as is happening in the NFL, players will eventually want unprecedented pay packages to remain in the league. Anthony Davis was next in line, and he recently signed a contract that would make him the highest-paid NBA player ever. According to reports, Jaylen Brown’s maximum contract will pay him $60.8 million over the course of five seasons. The record for Anthony Davis’s salary has been broken by $1,250,000.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski, Anthony Davis has signed a three-year, $186 million contract with the Los Angeles Lakers. If our calculations are true, that’s a new NBA record of $62 million per season. However, it’s likely that this will continue happening with some of the league’s finest players for at least another couple of months.

Some of the highest-paid players, such as Giannis Antetokounmpo, Nikola Jokic, and Joel Embiid, could not appreciate being left out. The other three players have been absolutely dominant in the league for the past three years, so it’s not like Davis or Brown don’t deserve their contract.

By setting this new benchmark, Anthony Davis has shown that he is one of the Lakers’ most valuable assets, and the team is committed to keeping him around for the foreseeable future. In the next weeks, everyone in the NBA will be counting down the minutes until a new record contract is signed.

Playing “guess the star who will break AD’s record” is a fun activity for the whole group. But for now, I hope he gets to experience for himself what Jaylen Brown did for a whole week. Jokic or Embiid would get our money if we had to choose. Giannis also stands a decent shot at achieving that feat.
