Max Scherzer has replaced Cliff Lee as the Rangers’ top starter.
The three-time Cy Young Award winner attributes his success to his former colleague.
On Sunday, Texas strengthened its pitching rotation for the playoff push by acquiring Scherzer from the Mets.
The 39-year-old right-hander will aid the Mets in making up for the loss of right-hander Jacob deGrom, who will miss the entire season due to Tommy John surgery he underwent in June.
Scherzer was introduced to the media by the Rangers on Tuesday, and they asked him about deGrom’s involvement in the trade.
“Yeah, I had a chat with Jake…. When it became clear that Texas was a possibility, I wаnted to learn as much as I could about the organization, as Scherzer put it.
It’s a terrific setting, a great fit, and (DeGrom) has really loved all the meп and the staff here. He felt like he was in a good spot because the meп were working hard and working well together. And if I were to move here, it would be ideal for me as well.
Even though DeGrom isn’t on the field for the Rangers right now, he’s made a significant impact by bringing in Scherzer for the playoff push.
Thus, “knowing a little history, and knowing him as well made it a little easier to put trust in his words,” Scherzer continued. I think what he stated is true, and I’m glad to be here.Scherzer signed a three-year, $130 million contract with the Mets, joining deGrom in Queens for the upcoming 2022 season.
After the 2022 season, deGrom signed a five-year, $185 million contract with the Rangers and departed.
Former Mets Cy Young Award winner Jacob deGrom underwent surgery after just six starts for Texas.
He had a 2-0 record and a 2.67 ERA at the time.
