Anthony Edwards, the number one choice in the 2020 NBA Draft, wasted no time making an impact. In 2023, he was named to the All-Star Team after making the All-Rookie First Team in 2023.
Edwards is entering his fourth season with career highs in every major statistical category. Edwards is changing his jersey number for the upcoming season, which is a bold move considering most people would be reluctant to alter what has been successful in the past.
The shooting guard gave fans high hopes when asked by Shams Charania what they may expect to see from Edwards with his new jersey number. A whole new cast member. I’m going to bring a new level of athleticism, dunks, and intensity to the court now that my name is on the jersey.
What caused this shift to occur?
Edwards claims he was patiently awaiting his opportunity.
While playing on his high school’s AAU team and during his solitary season at the University of Georgia, Edwards wore the number. However, his four-year NBA veteran teammate Malik Beasley had already claimed the number for himself.
Kyle Anderson signed with the Minnesota Timberwolves and claimed the number 32 jersey when Michael Beasley departed in 2022 to play for the Utah Jazz. Anderson, though, had his sights set on the No. 1 jersey that Edwards was wearing.
Success for all!
Anderson, who previously wore #1 for the San Antonio Spurs and Memphis Grizzlies, decided to switch to #5 for the Wolves because that was his number at UCLA.
Both Anderson and Edwards are pleased with the new arrangement. The original proprietors of the jersey numbers have reclaimed them.
But if Devin Booker (1) and De’Aaron Fox (5) were to sign with the Timberwolves, what would happen? Who exactly is going to give up their jersey number?
