In Inter Miami training, David Beckham maintains a careful eye on Lionel Messi, with whom he shares an embrace ahead of his second game tomorrow night.

David Beckham was at Inter Miami’s morning training session on Monday, keeping a close eye on superstar Lionel Messi and embracing him ahead of the latter’s second game with his new team tomorrow night.

Messi reported to the Florida Blue Training Center in Fort Lauderdale, near to DRV PNK Stadium, to be put through his paces in front of Miami boss Tata Martino.

As Beckham, 48, sat on a red cooler wearing a black suit and sneakers with white stockings and a pink Inter Miami cap, he participated in conditioning and on-the-ball drills with his teammates.

Messi made his Inter Miami debut last week with a sensational free-kick goal in stoppage time against Cruz Azul of La Liga MX in the Leagues Cup.

On Tuesday, the Herons host MLS rivals Atlanta United in their second group-stage encounter of the competition.

On Sunday, MLS commissioner Don Garber stated that Messi’s presence in the United States demonstrates the league’s “unending ambition,” possibly implying that one day the finest players on the planet will migrate to North America at the age of 26 rather than 36.

‘I think you should start with getting the best of all time to select us now,’ he remarked when asked about the potential change.

‘What will it look like in the years to come perhaps it will because I think the perception of Major League Soccer is going to shift tremendously over the next number of years.

‘I believe our own ambition will shift as we all watch how this all plays out.

‘But I think everyone has this label that they put on because there are a few really famous stars who come near the end of their career.’

‘I mean, David Beckham was 31 at the time. ‘He went to Milan and PSG after that,’ said Garber, the MLS commissioner since 1999. ‘Yet no one told Zlatan when he left LA and then went to Milan for two years, where he was the leading scorer for a period, that AC Milan is a retirement club.’

Garber also takes tremendous delight in the fact that Messi, whom he calls “the best player in the history of the game,” chose MLS over Saudi Arabia or a return to Barcelona.
