With a stoppage-time free kick goal to give Inter Miami victory against Cruz Azul in the Leagues Cup, Lionel Messi has a dream start to life in the United States.

A spectacular last-second free kick gave Lionel Messi a fantastic debut for Inter Miami and gave his team a 2-1 victory.

The long-awaited debut of the Argentinian superstar for his new team took place at Fort Lauderdale’s DRV PNK Stadium. His team was leading 1-0 when he made his entrance, but the opposing Cruz Azul club quickly tied the score.

Before Messi was fouled just outside the area and won a free kick in stoppage time, they appeared to be headed for a share of the spoils. And in a fairytale start to his career in the United States, he dutifully stepped up and curled the ball straight into the top corner to win the game. Co-owner David Beckham became distraught in the crowd after the breathtaking moment.

LeBron James, Kim Kardashian, and Serena Williams were just a few of the celebrities in attendance at the game. Cruz Azul was the superior team for a significant portion of the game, but Messi found it difficult to contribute after entering the game.

But at an unforgettable moment, his quality shone through when it counted most. He gave his new team a winning start in the Leagues Cup by bending a beautiful left-footed effort over the goalkeeper and into the top corner.

In the stand, Beckham shook his head in amazement and appeared genuinely upset. It signaled a successful beginning for the lucrative deal that the former England player was ultimately able to arrange for his MLS franchise.
