The Future of Mbappe: PSG’s Sense of Betrayal

Kylian Mbappe’s future is uncertain, and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) feels betrayed by the player’s recent behavior. PSG does not want to let the captain of the French team go for free next year, but Mbappe’s contract is set to expire in 2022-23.

Recently, PSG President Nasser Al-Khelaifi met with Tottenham’s Daniel Levy and realized that the two clubs share a compromised situation: their biggest stars enter the final year of their contracts without an extension. If the clubs do not sell their stars this summer, they will be free to leave after a year without leaving any money for the governing club.

PSG has been negotiating an extension with Mbappe until 2025, with more generous conditions. The club discussed the possibility of investing in a number of businesses that Mbappe is preparing to launch, including an agency. However, Mbappe shocked PSG when he informed the club that he would not activate the extension option in the contract to extend the relationship for another season until 2025. The club feels deeply betrayed.

PSG knew that Mbappe was in control, and they couldn’t sell the player if he didn’t want to. Al-Khelaifi believes that the team can find a way to convince Mbappe to renew his contract, but the situation has paralyzed PSG. If Mbappe does not renew, the club will be forced to sell him, and it will be difficult to hire others at the same level.

The move comes at a time when some investors are assessing the possibility of holding positions in PSG’s shares, and uncertainty makes operations difficult. PSG feels betrayed by Mbappe’s behavior, and his recent letter stating that he would not renew his contract has left the club in a very fragile situation.

The circumstances surrounding Mbappe’s intentions were strange. The club learned that Mbappe had written a letter stating that he did not renew his contract, but it was a document dating from almost a year earlier, to July 15, 2022, which the player did not send to the team. Instead, the newspaper L’Equipe received it last month, before Al-Khelaifi.

PSG is disappointed with Mbappe’s behavior, as they convinced him to sign a new deal last year, although it was not the agreement the board of directors desired. Mbappe agreed to two years, plus an option that only he himself can decide, but he later gave a verbal promise to Al-Khelaifi that he would never leave for free.

The current situation shows a big crack in the strategy between the club and the players, and it has damaged the image of the team as well as Mbappe himself. PSG is facing serious financial risk, and Al-Khelaifi understands that Mbappe’s behavior puts the club in a difficult position. PSG needs to find a way to resolve this situation before it’s too late.
